Sandy Gilchrist

I-am-Sandy Gilchrist,

Born in Peebles Scotland too many years ago to mention. I work with the factory racing team as a mechanic and also with the Specialized customer support program based out of Holtzkirchen, Germany. As a mechanic, I have attended 6 Olympic Games and numerous World Championships for mountain bike, track road, cyclo-cross, and Paralympics sports.

I raced at world level on the road, track and mountain bike earning several British and Scottish national championship titles. For thirty-three years, I had a successful cycle retail business in Edinburgh. After “retiring” from active competition, I began to manage teams and use my mechanic expertise.

I have worked for the Specialized Factory Racing Team as a mechanic since 2003. I thoroughly enjoy working with the athletes on the team. It is a pleasure working with the best cycle products on the market. Fine tuning the bikes to the athletes requirements so that they are able to perform at their best is gratifying.

And it is a challenge working with an Irish manager and also working with an assistance manager who does not know if he is an “Italian” or a “German”. The atmosphere within the team is fun but with a true focus on being successful.

Here I am at Apeldoorn

March 21, 2011

Here I am at Apeldoorn in Holland for the Track World Championship, after our World Cups in Melbourne, Columbia, Beijing, Manchester, and the time has arrived to see if all the preparation has been correct.

I am again working for the Canadian team who have been very successful in the World Cups. We have the World Cup winners in the omnium for men and women; the omnuim consists of 6 events which are run over 2 days, for men its, a flying lap over 250 metres ,a 30km points race, a elimination race ( which is last person over the line every second lap is out ) a individual pursuit over 4kms, a scratch race over15km ( first over the line wins ) and to finish with a 1km time trial . The women follow the same disciplines but slightly shorter events.

We have 2 women in the Canadian team who are riding Specialized bikes, Clara Hughes an Olympic medallist at speed skating and Tara Whitten a double World Champion last year on the track.

The completion starts on Wednesday 23rd March right through until Sunday the 27th March.  I am sure the competition will be fierce as the Olympics next year in London is coming around pretty quickly and the all the countries are looking to set good times and collect medals.

After the Worlds I lock up my Track tools and get ready for the Mountain bike World Cups which will arrive soon in SA.

As always looking forward to the challenges that these events offer.

Stats for Sandy Gilchrist are coming soon.
