Scott Davis 'blocked' by French winter

Astana's Scott Davis returned to his home in Oiartzun, Spain, after midway through France's Etoile de Bessèges stage race. Team sports director, Giuseppe Martinelli, believes that the cold European weather "blocked" the Australian.

"He's a little bit behind in preparations, we thought he would be a little further ahead," explained Martinelli. "It was probably the big jump over to Europe, where it is freezing and 40 degrees colder. This likely just blocked him up."

Davis spent the off-season at home in Queensland with younger brother and team-mate Allan. The two competed in the Australian championships January 10 and they both travelled to their homes in Spain after Allan raced the Tour Down Under.

"He [Scott] started well like Andriy Grivko and Valeriy Dmitriyev, who both raced strongly in Australia," continued Martinelli. "But the weather difference between there and here is crazy."

Davis started Thursday's stage two from Nîmes to St. Ambroix, France, where conditions were cloudy, windy and 5°C. Friday, he travelled to his home in Spain to prepare for his next race, Trofeo Laigueglia, February 20
