The Italian talent has great time trial abilities and in 2005, he took the Italian national championship for U18 cyclists. Later in 2005, he won a bronze medal at the U18 world championships in the race against the clock.

He started his career at the continental team, Carmiooro-NGC where he showed promising efforts. So promising that he awoke a lot of interest in the international world of cycling and in 2011, he turned professional by signing a contract with Saxo Bank - Tinkoff Bank.
