On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!

I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

its great being home...

May 11, 2009

after a smooth evening flight i arrived at o.r. tambo at around 9 on tuesday night. cherise was there as always to make being home even better. i took a few days easy in pretoria and tried to do a lot of sleeping and get rid of whatever bug was plaguing the team the previous weekend. on thursday cherise and i did a really pleasant 4hr ride on the road. it felt so weird being back on the skinny wheels!

on friday i packed up again and flew a little closer to my real home to compete in the mr price karkloof classic over the weekend. mr price have been my longest personal sponsor so it was great to be back after a few years of absence from what is an incredible weekend of events. on saturday i raced the sprint shoot out which turned out to be more of an obstacle course than a short track. there was loads of scaffolding, jumps and bridges. we even passed through a truck. at first i was quite nervous as things could easily go bad when you ride on thin tracks and then when you add 9 more riders all racing for R10 000 in a 6 minute race it could easily turn into a dog show. nevertheless i qualified tied first with my good friend craig paul and the confidence was up a little. in the final race i got off to a descent start and worked my way to the front over the first half of the race and then built up a comfortable margin at the end.

on sunday it was off on a sweet 75km marathon loop. usually 75km doesnt seem that long but after only racing for two hours the last few weeks i thought it would feel like forever. however the organization built a 3hr long xc course it seems and i had a huge grin on my face the whole way through. the single track was so much fun i almost forgot it was a race. i felt good on the day and after the first 10km i had only kevin evans along for company. at around 15km to go kevin showed some weakness and i forced a little gap. i have raced the karkloof classic since i was 10 years old and ive never won here. i was very happy then on sunday when i came home solo.

the weeknd was just about perfect until on sunday night i had some burglars help themselves to the stuff inside my car. i woke up to a glass filled seat at 4 am in the morning as i had to take cherise to the airport. the night before i had also packed the car so my backpack with everything was gone. when i say everything i mean it all... laptop, garmin, ipod, shoes, passport, helmet etc.after a few trips to the police station i got it all sorted. the saps at south port were very helpful and by the end afternoon i was enjoying a quiet sundowner ride with my mom at my side...its great to be home!

ciao
