On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!

I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

Sani2C, South Africa

March 2, 2009

On Wednesday I packed up the van and headed off to the airport to pick up Conrad Stoltz, who was my partner for the 3 day Sani2C. The race comprises three stages starting in the infamous Drakensberg and finishing on the coast a mere 50km away from my home.

After picking Conrad up and a leisurely drive to Underberg I managed to cram in a three hour ride with Cherise. It rainied most of the time but the picturesque country side made up for the wet clothes on our backs.

The first stage was 85km long and kicked off around 6 am, which for pro athletes is way too early; well it is for me anyways. The first section was on a fast open dirt road and at around the 20km mark I got caught up in a bunch crash and ended up hurting the same knee I fell on a few weeks back. Nevertheless Conrad and I chased back to the lead group and caught them as we hit the main climb of the day. This is where we would let go off the leaders anyway making our chase a pointless effort. From here on we got to really enjoy the route and ride a steady pace to the finish. A definite highlight on the stage had to be the floating bridge complete with corners and all...we even mangaed a solid 7th spot.

Day Two started at an insanely early time of 5 30am. This was the hardest part of the race for me but with the support of Conrad I narrowly made it through! The day was 100k long so it was a good slog and perfect prep for the cape epic comping up soon. The first quarter of the race comprised mostly muddy single track so we were in our element. After a rather brisk 4hours and 10 minutes we crossed the line that Conrad was desperately looking for over the last 15km. I think an Xterra mtb leg is slightly shorter than day two of the sani 2 c ...!!!

On day three it seemed like we got to sleep in as we only jumped away at around 7am. Again we started on a fast and flat dirt road section before hitting some fun singletrack. It was a good workout for me over the course of day three as I only had a 40 tooth front chainring and the speeds were high. As we entered the beach we got to cross another floating bridge before finishing in the center of Scottburgh. After a quick hose down to get the mud off I took off to get some extra miles in and rode home. In the evening we had a good dinner recollected the past days experiences... I had such a good time riding with a legend of the Xterra sport; not to mention the story telling capabilities .....

Stats for Burry Stander are coming soon.
