On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!

I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

The week kicked off with a long travel......

July 13, 2009

The week kicked off with a long travel from knysna up to pretoria. i think the route follows some of the straightest roads in the country! after 12hours straight we arrived at cherise's house. on tuesday i did a nice 3 hour ride at recovery pace. it was exciting in all the traffic though. on wednesday i did another easy ride around the union buldings. the last time i rode it was when i raced sa road champs as a junior. the goverment is building some new offices along the lap which might just be the biggest building ive seen sa...

on thursday we left to mankele for the 2009 african continental championship. the venue is a favourite of mine and i was eager to compete despite the head cold i had obtained throughout the week.

in 2007 when i won the african title the elite and u/23 raced together and i won the combined race on that occasion. this time around the u/23 section started 5min behind the elites and we would race for one less lap.this gave me a cool challenge as to see how far i could get up the elite field. i got off to a shaky start with some serious wheelspinning and then my foot slipping out of the pedal. i got off the line dead last but as the firsty 500m was all on open dirt road i was soon using the group ahead's slipstream to get by. i entered the first singletrack in 2nd spot and moved into the lead on the first climb. i was ridding good but struggling to feel comfortable. on the second lap i had a good lead but kept pushing to find my rythm. i started catching the back markers of the elite field and one off the kenyan riders got stuck and fell right onto my front wheel forcing me to jump over the bars. i remounted a little frazzeld and in the next technical section my approach was way too slow and i slid out on an off-camber bank, hit a tree and again went flying over the handlebars. from here i relaxed for the rest of the lap and got things back together. i had got almost halfway up the elite field and my lap times were improving. as i finished my 5 lap race the leader in the elites was 30 seconds up the road so i decided to do an extra lap and make some exciting racing. marc bassingthwaite was riding well and it took some serious digging for me to catch him by the end of the lap...

well done to mark and the guys from the mankele bike park for an awesome event. the course was great as usual.

this week ill return home for some last prep and rest before leaving to canada next week.

ciao
