On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!

I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

a cross-country,road and tt championships...

March 18, 2009

after a fourteen hour drive on over last weekend i arrived in oudtshoorn on sunday evening for the south-african road and tt championships. oudtshoorn is in a valley that gets deadly hot.i didnt know this before but i do now.on tuesday our 195km race kicked off at around noon.the csa(cycling south-africa)ruled that only teams with four or more riders were allowed a following vehicle which realy unleveled the playing field in the 48C temperatures that were experienced.after 120km i was already heavily dehydrated and over heating badly so i pulled the plug and turned my focus to the tt and xc race later in the week.

for the tt i had the most awesome gear.fully pimped s-works transition tt bike,tt2 helmet, skinsuit, garmin 705 and the very cool new oakley jawbones.it was a very flat tt route so i knew i had to put in everything to secure a result.i was hopin to maybe get my first tt medal at sa championships and knew it would be a tall order.i started hard over the first climb and settled into a more comfortable rythm soon after.i also started drinking early which would prove wise over the hot 40km course.at the halfway turn io was 1min 30sec up on the split i had set the day before and i was still feeling realy good.i kept closing down on the riders in front of me and focused on turning my rotor rings rapidly.the last 5km was the hardest of the course as it was up a 2% drag,it was here that the garmin was very useful as i could fight to keep the speed up.i eventualy hit the line in 51min 35 seconds to claim the silver medal in the u/23 section and 4th overall.aggod transition for a non-timetrialist i think...

after the tt we packed up and headed for george.this was to compete at the xc championships on saturday.it was also cheris' first xc race so it was very exciting.i headed to the venue early on saturday to support cherise and my development team under the mr price banner.the pro elites kicked off at 12 and after a slow start that saw me into the singletrack around 5th i made my way to the front after a few k's.as i got there we hit the bumpiest climb on the route and i managed to accelarate my epic away from the field.from here on it was head down and having fun onbourd the full susser over the rough stuff.i crossed the line with a sweet gap.pulling the sa champs jersey over my back is always an awesome feeling and one that makes me feel like i can head to the world cups with confidence...

this week im down in stellenbosch preparing for the epic with the team.check out songo.info to find out what our race there is all about.

thanks for the support
