On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!
I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

south african marathon mtb championships
August 10, 2009this weekend i was off to harrismith to compete in the sa marathon champs.it's the first time in 4 years that i have been home to do so.the week leading up went pretty good.i did a solid ride on wednesday after some serious traveling as i returned from canada.on thursday i had a sore throat which was pretty normal after the long flights but by friday i was feeling alot better and after a nice spin along the coast i drove up north for saturdays race.
cherise had some business in johannesburg to attend to so she drove down from there and met my parents and i in harrismith on friday afternoon.i made sure my equipment was prepped for sat and then we enjoyed a buffet meal in the hotel.
at 8 30 am the race kicked off in some great winter sunshine.it was alittle cold but alot drier than canada!the first few km's were neutral which was great to warm the legs up,unlike the world cups where you go straight to the pain zone as soon as the gun fires.
after the first few k's we turned off the fire road and hit some rough jeep track.the course was pretty flat with some small bumps until we started the climb up to the k.o.m. hotspot.the rough jeep track section was great on the specialized epic and i could tell the other guys in the lead group had been suffering even before we got to the climb.i uped the tempo on the climb and managed to pull a gap of just under a minute as i neared the top.i knew that if i could get out of sight early and setle into my own rythm on the very bumpy route the gap would grow rapidly.and so it did,the bike was just incredible.i just focussed on keeping a high cadence over the first 3hours and the bike did the rest.by the time i got to the 75km tech and feed zone i had a five minute gap and i was still feeling relatively fresh.
the last 40km was partly the same loop as we started on and this meant climbing the k.o.m climb again.as i reached the climb i could definitely feel the legs tiring and it was very clear when i had to ride the climb two gears easier than on the first time around.lucily for me we only had one more climb up to the 107km point before heading back down to harrismith for the finish.after a hard 4hr 17min in the saddle i claimed my first national marathon title and i was extremely stoked!in second place was sa specialized rider ben-melt swanepoel making it a 1-2 for the specialized epic!
on sunday i cherise and i had a sweet recovery ride before checking out some drag-racing at the margate airport.nothing is free though,in return i sat through 3 hours of the harry potter film in the evening.it did turn out to be quite entertaining...
till next week...
