On being Specialized: A great opportunity to becoming the best I can be, and a bunch of good times with great people along the way!

I started riding mountain bikes with my dad and older brothers on a farm just outside of port Shepstone in KZN at the age of 10. I remember those first years as the most challenging of my career. I think the bikes I was on back then weighed more than me but it didn’t deter my enthusiasm. Instead I always wanted to ride further and faster by day and by night I was flipping through American mountain bike magazines dreaming of one day meeting my heroes that graced the pages. 10 years have gone by and my passion has stayed the same. The same things that drove me back then drive me today. For me its all about being the best that I can be,and if that gets me to the top id be very grateful. The sport has taken me on an awesome journey over the years, in 1999 I won my first Sa and African titles as a u/13 or sprog as the category is known. In 2005 I made a trip to the usa to compete against the best that country had to offer. I managed three wins out of four in their national series and with that I got a wonderful opportunity to race for the gt international mountain bike team in 2006. I steadily improved over my first two years as a pro with the team racing the world cup series all over the world and had a brake through year this year winning the u/23 world cup and placing 5th in the pro men. In 2008 I also had the awesome honour of representing South Africa at the Olympic games in Beijing where I finished in 15th place. I continue to race locally whenever the chance permits and I enjoy riding with friends and family whenever I get the chance.

world cup round 1,dalby forrest,uk

April 27, 2010

as my report from last weeks sea otter classic didnt seem to get through to anyone ill do a brief summary of the racing there.

after a solid week of r&d at the specialized offices we were off to the weekends racing. i was super excited to try my new 29er in the heat of racing. the guys at the specialized suspension shop did an awesome job at customizing the 90mm fork.

in the short track i had a slow start with team mate todd wells riding away at the front. the race is only about 25min long so it is a full gas effort and every second counts. i managed to work through the group and get up to wellsy before i crashed in a mud hole along the course. from there on we rolled in for a specialized 29er 1-2. suzie also came in 4th on his first ride on the ht in 10 years.

in the xc todd and i got off the front with only geoff kabush joining us halfway through the race. we tried attacking him all the way to the finish but to no avail. it came down to a sprint so all my road racing this summer in sa paid off went i took my first uci xc win of the year. todd came in third and suzie 4th.

so now on to dalby for the world cup

first off, what a travel! after a 12hour flight from san Francisco we got to frankfurt and checked the flight boards. all the flights were still canceled. it took us 5 hours off planning to finally roll out of there with two rentals. we caught the ferry in calais, france at around midnight and after 15hours of driving through the night we made it to england. i just collapsed for the rest of what was wednesday.

on thursday we had to do some good training and surprisingly i felt pretty good. i was testing my epic and 29er on the track back to back and decided to run the 29er at the first world cup. there was a lot of pebble like bumps which the 29er just rolls over so fast.

on sunday 180 of us took the course at 2 30pm. the weather was great all week and after some evening showers just a little damp. i got a solid start and after riding around the first tow laps in around 10th to conserve energy i decided to go ride at the front as i figure it would be easier. it was for sure and i could really get the big wheels turning.at the end of the 4th lap i only had nino schurter and julien absalon. we fought it out for the last two laps and with half a lap to go i made two big mistakes which gave those guys a 10 second gap. i could close it and they settled the race in a sprint. nino won with julien in 2nd. i came in 14 seconds back to take 3rd. i was pretty happy as i felt so good all day. hopefully i can learn from the mistakes i made as we head into this weekends 2nd round in houffalize.

ciao
