Tasmania

January 26, 2012

The holidays were just awesome back home in Canada and after a few tough and cold weeks of getting back into the groove of training, I flew down here to Tasmania on the 17th. It was quite nice going from ice, snow, rain, hail to full on summer. It's been a week already down here and I feel like I am starting to feel normal and training is coming along nicely. It been 3 years since I was here last so it's great to be back and more importantly, visit my ever supportive parents.

Did a nice 3.5 hr road ride yesterday which included a 18 km, 50 min climb up the famous mountain, Mt. Wellington which looms over the city of Hobart. It had been white a while since I put in the sort of effort, but with my first race of the year starting on Saturday, I felt like a needed to open the legs and lungs up a little. Was super happy with the effort and numbers and feeling both rested and ready for the hard work over the next couple of months. Was nice to have my super-domestique mom follow my in her truck, providing me with drinks, food, extra clothing and taking a few pictures as well.

The race I am doing which starts on Saturday is called the Wildside Mtb. It's a 4-day stage race and I a super excited to get some race sensations back in the legs as well as seeing a part of Tasmania which I have never see. Apparently, where the race takes place is a lot like the west coast back home so that should be pretty cool to see. There are 3 or 4 top Aussie guys racing, including former teammate and ripper Sid Taberlay so it should be a hard 4 days as it's their peak season right now.

Was able to sneak in a super fun surf the other day on Bruny Island which is just south of here. Was perfect long-boarding surf and not a cloud in the sky. Bruny Island is so neat and super quiet, I have never seen so much road kill in my life though, you literally have to be ready to bunny hop something around each corner on the bike. I guess the island is some sort of sanctuary for possums, wallabies, ekidnas, wombats etc and the only predator is well, a car.

It's Australian National day here and I should be drinking fosters, eating kangaroo and listening to AC-DC; but instead I think we are going to BBQ some nice steaks up and crack a good bottle of vino although a little Aussie rock n roll might be good too.

I'll send an update next week after the Wildside, looking forward to it.
