Bunch rides and July
August 5, 2010It’s amazing the effect of watching the Tour de France has on people. I’ve noticed over the last couple of years the pace at the front is always a couple of miles an hour faster, as well as a few new faces popping up at the front wanting to get into the action. With this newfound inspiration of July comes some moments of amusement as well…. well let’s just say some drama. Last week was somewhat of a replay of the Tour highlights: nothing like the touching of wheels at the front that gives a domino effect the whole way through the peloton of 300 guys, just to make everyone nervous first thing in the morning. Then we go into the sprint, and apparently there was a bit of Julian Dean / Mark Renshaw action happening, which I only found out about when we stopped at the next red light. I had two guys stepping off right in front of me, ready for a Stage 6 replay, ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcJPQh72mDg&feature=related ); thankfully no one removed their wheel. Though disaster did strike shortly afterwards with a massive pile up at 30 m/h, somehow I managed to avoid disaster, I wish very one who went down a speedy recovery. To top the July story off, I heard rumors from the Orange County bunch ride, apparently two masters riders decided they want their own version of Stage 6; perhaps it’s one of those Chinese whispers stories, but drama none the less. I know young guys will decide a dispute with a physical challenge, but with age and wisdom how does a master category rider resolve a dispute? Pepper spray! I know we are in LA, but who carries pepper spray for a bunch ride? Or perhaps I’ve missed the memo about the new co2 that also doubles as self-defense device. Perhaps that wouldn’t be a bad cycling invention for the next time some agro motorist decides to do the wrong thing. Anyway, enough sh#t talking, until next week, remember we all share the same love of cycling and stay safe.
